About Music is Art

Music is Art is a not-for-profit, federal 501c3 organization founded in 2003 by Goo Goo Dolls bassist and Buffalo, NY resident, Robby Takac. Music is Art operates through a board of directors, small staff, sponsors, volunteers, and several partner organizations. We embrace the diversity of people, ideas, and talent, and are inspired by possibilities.

Music is Art is proud to enrich the Western New York community with access to music. It is our hope that we encourage people to find their musical voice, think about how music touches their lives, and most importantly, to think about the fact that…music is art.

Festival History

Music is Art, the organization, was born out of the Festival. The dedicated way that the community got behind the concept of the annual Festival made it clear we needed to be more than a once a year event. Pretty quickly, the instrument donation program was started, and the Battle of the Bands was right after that. Several programs have come and gone over the years for one reason or another, but those two continue to this day, over two decades later. We are always looking for new ideas, and new programs to support this creative community we are proud to be a part of.

2003-2006

The Beginning

The first festival was held in the parking lot at Robby's studio to coincide with the Allentown Art Festival. There were 2 stages of music - one inside, and one outside. It was held in that neighborhood for 3 more years after that, but included closing some streets!

2007

The Suburb Year

The MiA Festival was held in 2007 at the Hamburg Fairgrouds, the only year that it was not in the city of Buffalo and that this guy wasn't there.

2008-2016

The Albright Knox Years

From 2008 - 2016 the Festival was located at the Albright Knox Art Gallery and grew across the street into Delaware Park. It grew each year, not only in the footprint, but in the number of stages and participants. And yes, it rained...a lot!

2017-2018

Buffalo RiverWorks

In our quest for some cover, we moved the Festival to Buffalo RiverWorks, where most of our stages could be under a roof.

2020

The Virtual Year

While the majority of the world was practicing social-distancing, we felt the show had to go on. While no public was invited to attend, we still managed to hold the Festival virtually and live stream the entire event.

2021-2023

Back to RiverWorks + more!

2021 had us back in the world and we came back bigger than ever! We expanded into the neighborhoods surrounding RiverWorks and across the river into River Fest Park and beyond!

2024 - Now

The Outer Harbor

In 2024, we moved the Festival to Buffalo's Outer Harbor and the Terminal B and Lakeside Bike Park area. This is our largest footprint yet, and boy do we pack it in!
